A world in itself

The two of them traveled up river. The waves rippled behind them, beckoning them to row faster. It was like they were being pulled in, as if the river reversed its flow back to the source. Although the water seemed serene, the current was strong, leaving them to paddle only when they needed to turn in a bend in the canyon. They twisted through the terrain like a snake navigating between staggered rocks. A short straightaway was ahead allowing them to put their paddles in their laps. The navigator in front brought his binoculars up from his chest and looked ahead and upward, scanning the ridge of the canyon walls. Carefully he scanned every inch of the canyon crests on either side of the snaking river adjusting as the boat dipped and jogged rhythmically.
